Job Description

Job Summary:

Daimyo Holdings, a Multi-Strategy Hedge Fund, is seeking a multifaceted and highly analytical Energy Equity Research Analyst to join our Fundamental Value Public Markets Investment Team based in Los Angeles, California. The role’s responsibilities will be centered around researching and analyzing publicly traded companies across the energy value chain, including Oil & Gas (upstream, midstream, downstream), Oilfield Services & Equipment, Coal & Consumable Fuels, Nuclear Energy, and Utilities. The Analyst will be responsible for identifying undervalued securities and durable long-term investment opportunities across both Value and Growth strategies, with direct involvement in security selection for small-, mid-, and large-cap companies. The role requires deep fundamental research, rigorous financial modeling, and the development of clearly articulated investment theses supported by data-driven analysis and independent thinking. Candidates must be capable of synthesizing complex technical, operational, regulatory, and financial information into actionable investment conclusions. The ability to clearly explain why a company is investable—or not—is critical, and all investment summaries must be supported by concise, well-documented research and evidence. This role demands strong research skills, disciplined problem-solving, and thorough critical thinking. Collaboration is expected and encouraged. The Analyst will interface regularly with senior investment staff, portfolio managers, traders, company management teams, sell-side analysts, engineers, scientists, data specialists, and industry consultants whose insights may inform investment decisions. Intellectual curiosity, effective communication, and the ability to both challenge and refine one’s own investment theses are essential.

Candidates may submit their resume to Kc@DaimyoCP.com. All inquiries will be treated confidentially.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth fundamental research to identify impactful investment opportunities across Oil & Gas, Nuclear Energy, Utilities, Coal, and Energy Infrastructure.
  • Drive security selection across the Energy sector in conjunction with the Portfolio Manager.
  • Research new investment ideas and conduct maintenance research on existing portfolio holdings.
  • Monitor and analyze industry trends, competitive dynamics, regulatory developments, and infrastructure expansions impacting energy markets.
  • Build and maintain detailed financial models, dashboards, and valuation frameworks to assess earnings power, asset quality, downside protection, and intrinsic value.
  • Develop and communicate investment ideas tailored to the firm’s investment philosophies, clearly articulating buy, hold, and sell recommendations.
  • Effectively communicate, explain, and defend investment ideas to senior investment staff and the Portfolio Manager.
  • Assist in the development of research-driven investment theses and assemble detailed presentations to support capital allocation decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with portfolio managers, analysts, traders, and other team members to support investment execution and risk assessment.
  • Attend industry-related events and conferences domestically and globally as needed.

Research & Modeling Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain models capturing supply, demand, and price dynamics in North American natural gas markets.
  • Develop forecasting tools for regional supply/demand balances and broader market fundamentals.
  • Build and maintain regional pipeline balance models and infrastructure flow tracking tools.
  • Analyze domestic transportation fuel consumption, power plant cycle efficiencies, and heat transfer equations for stochastic processes.

Market Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Track and analyze regulatory developments, infrastructure expansions, and industry news impacting natural gas and broader energy markets.
  • Prepare and distribute daily, weekly, and monthly reports on price movements and market fundamentals for traders, management, and internal stakeholders.
  • Maintain familiarity with EIA, FERC, pipeline flow data, and other critical industry data sources.

Collaboration & Strategy Support:

  • Work closely with traders to identify trading and investment opportunities and assess associated risks.
  • Provide timely and accurate market intelligence to support trading, portfolio construction, and risk management decisions.
  • Contribute to the build-out of a research and fundamentals platform supporting the Energy and Natural Gas investment strategy.

Process Improvement & Innovation:

  • Enhance the use of IT tools, automation, and data workflows to improve research efficiency and information flow.
  • Improve communication and knowledge-sharing across teams and departments.
  • Contribute to additional start-up and ad hoc initiatives in a fast-paced investment environment.

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of equity research experience, with a minimum of 3 years on the buy-side.
  • Deep knowledge of Energy and Utilities markets, particularly in the small- and mid-cap space.
  • Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Natural Gas Engineering, Oil, Gas & Energy Management, Geothermal Energy Production, or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or a related field of study.
  • Prior experience as a growth analyst or in a similar role within investment management or the energy industry.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Excel, SQL, and Bloomberg Terminal.
  • Experience across equities, derivatives, and futures markets.
  • Extensive knowledge of Oil & Gas, Nuclear, and Utilities, including market structures and regulatory environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to utilize second-level thinking to generate differentiated investment ideas.
  • A citable and documented track record of investment success.

Desired Personal Attributes:

  • Independent thinker with a high level of intellectual curiosity.
  • Willingness to challenge conventional wisdom and take contrarian views when appropriate.
  • Openness to reassessing and changing investment theses when facts change.
  • Strong work ethic and demonstrated passion for investing in public markets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small, collaborative team environment.

Additional Information:

Employment offers will be based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.
